The Concept of Color
What The Eye Sees.
This two-volume textbook explores color theory through the lens of oil painting, blending historical insight with hands-on application. Designed specifically for painters, the series offers both a foundational understanding of how color has been understood across centuries and a practical guide to mixing, layering, and experimenting with pigments in oil.
While many color theory books take a generalized or digital approach, this project stays rooted in the tactile, expressive world of traditional painting. Volume One delves into the evolution of color—from ancient pigments and classical palettes to scientific breakthroughs and artistic movements—offering readers a contextual framework. Volume Two transitions into studio practice, covering color mixing, temperature, harmony, and the unique behaviors of oil-based media.
The design embraces a clean yet textured aesthetic, with diagrams, paint swatches, and annotated artworks guiding the reader through a rich visual and educational journey. These books aren’t just instructional—they’re a celebration of color as a living, ever-evolving element of artistic expression.
